The Various Brainwave States

February 10, 2010 by

You may be aware that using binaural beats lets you to obtain different states of mind. This is done by “tuning” your brain into different frequencies. Once your brain is tuned into these various frequencies, it’s easier to achieve the state you are looking for such as relaxation, thinking positively, increased memory, better focus, and more.

Over the years, scientists have discovered that various frequencies can be related to various states of mind. For an example, a frequency of 1 to 3 Hz (Hertz, or changes per minute) may be associated with deeper sleep. Binaural beats let you listen to a certain frequency to allow you to achieve different states of mind. And today (versus 150 years ago), it’s very easy to change your brainwave frequencies with just a CD or MP3 player and headphones.

In order to get your brain to tune into one of the specific frequencies, slightly different sounds can be delivered to each ear. In the case of binaural beats (there are also isochronic and monaural beats, but we’ll use binaural as the example here), a tone is administered to in each ear. One tone may be 100 Hz, the other is played at 108 Hz. This creates a binaural “beat” with the same frequency as the difference of the two (8 Hz). In this case, 8 Hz matches with the theta state of mind which is good for creating ideas.

The frequencies which the binaural beats can target are referred to as theta, beta, alpha and delta states. These four categories each target a different frequency and thus different states of mind. There is a chance you have heard of these states previously, and these are commonly used when discussing binaural beats.

Beginning in the 13 Hz to the 25 Hz range is the beta frequency range. In this range, your brain can work on reducing and eliminating stress and anxiety, as well as keeping alert.

Within the range of 8 to 12 Hz, you will be able to increase learning (“superlearning”), have a more positive state of mind, and feel some light relaxation. This range is referred to as the alpha range.

From 4 to 7 Hz, you can receive benefits that include deeper relaxation (which is great for meditating), improving your memory, better focus, and more. This is the theta range.

Delta frequencies occur at lower than 4 Hz. Deep, dreamless sleep, increased immune functions, lucid dreaming and losing awareness of your body can occur in this range.

From this article you can see that binaural beats can be taken advantage of to induce an array of mental states. With each of these different states, benefits can be had for the listener, even if the listener does not have any prior experience with binaural beats at all. All they require is an open mind.
