Women empowerment has always been one of the primary concerns of our society because of various reasons. In spite of various initiatives and bills from the government, there still exists a disparity between the status of men & women in our society. Men still earn higher than women. Higher paying jobs still have only a small percentage of female allocation. To overcome this disparity the government is giving concession in many forms in all aspects for women. One such initiative is the scholarship for women. The objective behind this is to enable women to obtain education, leadership positions in corporates and give them an entry into male dominated industries. Finance should’nt be a hindrance to their progress and hence this initiative.

Women are given scholarships when they choose subjects like Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The AAUW sponsors fellowship in selected professions for women. This scholarship is given to women who want to do either an under graduate or a post graduate course in these subjects. The scholarship amount provided ranges from $5000 to $20000. Women who want to pursue Engineering, Computer, Information Sciences and Architecture are all given these scholarships. The Society of Women Engineers gives scholarships for women who pursue Engineering study in both the under and post graduate level. There is a list of scholarships for women who want to pursue the study of arts. One of the scholarships for arts is Professional Development Fellowship. It provides $5000 for artists and historians of arts. The fellowship is awarded in the pre-final year of Ph. D, M.A or M.F.A.
All universities and colleges provide scholarships for women and all the major departments in all colleges also have options and facilities for providing scholarships for women.
There also exist organizations and professional associations who provide scholarships for female candidates according to their passion. Two ideal examples are the Society of Women Engineers and the American Association of University Women. Women Chefs and Restaurateurs (WCR) is one such professional organization that enhances and promotes the advancement, education and connection of female candidates within the culinary industry. This association offers unique internship opportunities and scholarships to its members. There also exist several other organizations that provide scholarships and various learning opportunities. But one needs to join these organizations to be eligible for their scholarships.
Many women who are from the minorities are at a great disadvantage when it comes to education. Hispanic and black minority women are among many others who are at a disadvantage. However, many scholarships are provided for them too. AAUW’s Selected Professional Fellowship for Afro American Women provides scholarships for them and helps them in the study of Medicine, Law or business. The funds provided are generous and cover most of the educational fees. World Studio.org is another organization which works on a nonprofit basis and provides scholarships for women who wish to study the arts. There are other funds like the Hispanic college fund and United Negro College fund which help the women under minority status.
There are many scholarships available for women who wish to acquire specialization skills and post graduate degrees. There are many women who due to various reasons, in spite of being skilled in the school level never entered college. Scholarships are available to help such women in getting into a college and obtain a degree. AARP foundation has a scholarship fund for women who have been out of high school for more than 10 years and also who are above the age of forty. This scholarship fund is present to help the women obtain job skills and educational qualifications which will help them to obtain a job that pays them reasonably and ultimately help their family.
The development of women in any country will develop the status of the country as a whole by leaps and bounds and for this, women must be aware of the scholarship programs that are available for them.
