Faster than Light Speed Travel: Is it Possible and More
It seems that, as time passes, more people are becoming more interested in science, often due to the number of movies that are based around it, along with numerous television shows. One are in particular that people often want to know more about would be in regards to the speed of light. While most understand the general concept, there is generally more to it than people might be aware of.
A lot of people learn about the basics when in regards to the way light travels and at what rate. For instance, most know that it plays a crucial role in the world of physics in general, especially since it is a physical constant. Some are even aware of the fact that it travels at a rate of approximately 299, 792, 458 meters per second, which also comes to about 186, 282 miles per second.
In order to explain this theory further, one must have an understanding for C, which stands for constant. This, in the theory of relativity, is quite commonly seen in the famous equation of E=mc2, which stands for mass-energy equivalence. The point of C interrelates to space and time.
C, or constant, when in relation to special relativity denotes light. This represents the maximum speed that anything relating to information, matter and energy will travel at within the known universe. This is the overall rate that particles travel at when they do not contain any mass, which includes electromagnetic radiation, or light, and any associated fields.
The rate that associated fields and particles lacking mass travel at is predicted by the rate of which gravity travels, which is also at a constant speed of C. This is generally based off of gravity waves, like all waves, which doesn’t rely off the motion of the source or the position of the actual observer.
When light goes through transparent-like materials and substances, like that of air or other materials, this may be something that causes the energy to refract. When this occurs, this will slow the rate of travel down, so that it becomes less than C, lessening its general speed as the end result.
Even though this energy is commonly referred to as instantaneous, that may not always be the case. This can be due to a number of things, including the very theories that focus around space and time. In fact, one great example of this can be seen in the stars, which shine down upon people every night. However, theories point toward the light that people see at night may actually be from ages ago, due to being slowed down by the amount of distance that the energy must travel through, along with many other factors.
In truth, the theories and facts that circulate around the speed of light seem virtually endless. Even so, it is something that continues to intrigue and baffle the mind, whether if it’s concerned the everyday individual, or some of Science’s greatest minds.
