Effective Resume Writing Tips
When preparing your resume, you you should be aware that in order to be effective, you need to be detailed. There are many tricks to writing resumes that can be used to get you the job that you want.
First, do some research. Be familiar with the industry and its requirements. If you’ve worked in that field for quite some time, then you already know the rules. However, if you’re new to this, it will be worth the the time to do your homework.
Format:. There are three main types of resume formats and which you choose will depend greatly on your work history as well as on the job that you are applying for. You need to make sure that the resume format you select will fit your skills and abilities, and make you stand out.
Chronological resumes are based on a timeline. If you’re fresh out of college or if your experience is best displayed on a timeline, then this is the right format. With chronological resume writing, you start with the most recent experience and then go back. Generally, you separate your work experience and your education in this type of resume.
The functional format focuses on abilities, rather than on chronological history. When preparing a resume, using a functional format is a good choice if your skills and accomplishments were spread out over time. For example, if you had two different relevant jobs that you want to list first but they were ten years apart, you would want to use a functional resume format.
The combination format is more complex as since its a mixture of functional and chronological styles it might be confusing to the reader. The combination resume is a good way to emphasize your talents and achievements, while still listing your experience, which might not always appear on functional resumes.
Focus. When preparing your resume, in order to be effective, your focus should be on answering the employers needs, rather than on yourself. Think of your resume as a sales pitch of your abilities, and how they affect the position youre applying to. Don’t just say “I was responsible for…”. Instead, write “Increased sales by 40% over the previous year”. This shows what you can do for the company and that you’ve actually accomplished something that makes you qualified for the position you seek.
As long as you do your homework and take your time to write your resume, you shouldn’t have a difficult time writing a unique resume that will make you stand out. Here is one last tip you should keep in mind: DO NOT use resume templates or generic resumes to apply for jobs. If your resume is generic, the employer will think the same of you and hire someone who customized his/her resume to their requirements. Keep these things in mind and writing resumes should be a simple task for you.
