Easy Way Of Insulating A Roof Attic

by

The general phenomenon associated with heat states that heat flows from the hotter region to the colder region. The concept proves quite helpful in insulating the roof attics of your home. The external heat tends to travel from the outside roof surface to the insides of the house. In absence of a protective barrier, the heat spoils the efficiency of the cooling appliances such as air-conditioners and fans. Therefore, a protective shield must be installed to prevent such loss of energy.

Before moving ahead with the proceedings, understand the specifications of roof insulation. The roofers identify the efficiency of an insulating material in terms of its R-value. The R-value stands for the resistance value. Higher the R-value (resistance to heat flow), more is the resistance offered by the insulating material to heat flow. Hence, choose the insulating material that provides higher value of resistance to heat flow.

The salesperson may recommend you one of the two commonly available roof insulating materials, the cellulose and fiberglass. On comparing the two insulating materials to each other, the cellulose materials score over the fiberglass materials in terms of R-value. However, the fiberglass insulation is available on a low price and hence, it offers great value for money.

Make sure that the attic space is properly ventilated even after the insulation. Don’t compromise on the ventilation aspect of the attic as that may disturb the working of the roof.

Ensure proper insulation to the attic space with the help of baffles. Also, install the insulating material along the frames that are loose and flexible. Avoid the installation of the fiberglass materials to the joists of the foundation. The application of the baffles must be restricted to those areas of the attic framework which require mandatory ventilation.

Before installing the fiberglass components or the cellulose components, slip in a sheath of vapor barrier. The layer of the vapor barrier would act as a foundation for the installation of the insulating material.

The base of the roof as visible from the attic space could look like a framework of trusses and plywood sheathing. Identify the horizontal frames and the angled frames. Furthermore, locate the place for installing the new insulating material. The gap between the joists (horizontal frames) and the plywood or OSB layer is considered appropriate for the installation.

Take the help of an expert roofer whenever things start to slip out of your apprehension.
