Sandra Goldbacher has scored a clear winner with the Ballet Shoes movie. The film is an adaptation of the children’s classic by Noel Streatfield. The adaptation is appropriate with good locations and perfect costumes. The drama is set in London of the 1930s’.
Pauline, Petrova and Posy Fossil are three orphaned sisters who are adopted by an eccentric Great Uncle Matthew or Gum as he is more commonly known. He entrusts the care of the girls to her niece Emilia Fox who bestows upon the girls a selfless love. The three girls have their share of aspirations and ambitions – Pauline aspires to become an actress, Petrova wants to fly airplanes and Posy harbors hopes of becoming a ballet dancer.
The family is seen cash strapped and they live in abject poverty. There are lots of financial strains on the girls and they begin to feel exhausted, both emotionally and physically. Very soon they realized that there are obstacles galore between aspirations and reality.
The three girls help their guardian and niece Sylvia Brown played by Emilia Fox to meet the financial demands but still they fall short. So at last they decided to allow people to stay at their house. At this point we come across three boarders who came to stay here. Mr. Simpson, the garage owner, had an interest in cars and airplanes. Petrova would spend many hours chatting with him. Drs Jake and Smith took upon themselves to tutor the girls and Theo Dane the dance teacher did the girls a world of good when she managed to get them admitted to the school where she taught. The three girls began to grace the stage to earn the much needed money and in the process they discovered their hidden talents. Pauline becomes an excellent actress, Petrova learnt to fix engines and Posy realizes her dream of becoming a ballet dancer.
The Ballet Shoes movie is definitely a film made for the mature young audience but should be appreciated by the adults also. The film has an interesting storyline with good characters. The screenplay by Heidi Thomas needs special mention. The film has a charm and an innocence of its own.
All the three leads were impressive but the pick of them was Lucy Boyton who plays Posy. Lucy showed a maturity way beyond her age. Yasmin Page as Petrova is a thoughtful and intelligent actress. She was in one word – brilliant. I was a bit disappointed with Emma Watson. Though she has shed her Hermione character yet she was inconsistent at times in the movie. She did well in patches but could have done more justice to her reputation. Emilia Fox as the niece Sylvia Brown was fantastic and is great in bringing the character alive.
This is a wonderful movie and I would request you not to form an opinion about the film just by seeing the trailers. You need to watch it to like it. Sadly, there had been no theatrical release for this film. So I suggest you watch Ballet Shoes online free on a Sunday afternoon and enjoy the movie to the fullest. The movie belongs to the Disney films genre and you will really like as it also has a happy ending. The only point of concern is that the film might not be liked by today’s matter – of – fact modern audience.
