Constructing A Sod Roof

by

When it comes to the selection of a roofing material for your roof, the greener alternatives are preferred over the others. One such roof is the sod roof. Sod roofs are almost regular in the rural households. The detached or isolated houses prefer the sod roofs over the bulkier shingle or metal roofs. The attractive appearance of a sod roof adds to the serenity of your home spaces.

The sod roofs are energy-efficient as they help in maintaining the temperature of the home spaces. Hence, the efficiency of heating or cooling appliances enhances considerably and saves a lot of your energy.

Laying a sod roof on your existing roof can be considered daunting and time-consuming. However, it doesn’t call for regular repairs and maintenance once it is built.

Kick off the campaign by apprehending the potency of your existing roof. The output of the examination determines whether you can build a sod roof on your current roof or not. If the fault looks repairable one then go for its respective resolution. Look out for signs of water damage, leaks, rot and broken tiles on your present roof. Don’t compromise on that front as that could lead to a possible hazard.

Start with the construction of the boundary for the sod roof. Staple the pieces of wood (3 inches tall) along the edges of the current roof with a staple gun.

The sod roofs require a carefully manipulated base for its installation. The base of the sod roofs incorporates a layered architecture. Initialize the operation by laying a water-proof coating on the bare roof. Paint the roof with the help of a staple gun or a brush.

Initiate the actual task by laying pond liner over the entire roof surface. Follow it up by spreading potting soil (1 inch thickness) on the pond liner bed. Render proper drainage to the layer structure by applying an inch of gravel evenly on the preceding layer of soil. Once the gravel looks well spread, make way for another layer of potting soil over it. Keep the thickness of the layer to 1 inch only.

Finish off the task by placing the pieces of sod over the roof bed. Keep an expert supervision in tact throughout the length of the project. Do not forget to spray the installed roof lightly with water before you come down from the roof.
