Comparing The Desalination And Water Purification Techniques

by

Have you ever noticed some salty taste when you drink water? Do you think filtering the water means perfect for drinking? Well, let us be aware of the fact, even though we have filtered out minute impurities from water, it still consists of some aqueous salts which can only be eliminated by desalinization. The article below explains the major difference between water purification and desalinization.

Desalinization is a process by which the salt content of water is done away and water is made worth drinking. This process is also named as desalination. Whereas purification includes doing away with all the impurities of seawater, surface water and reclaimed water.

Desalinization basically makes the water salt free and this was done in olden times also. The method adopted was filtration and distillation. This method is capable of removing only undissolved salts and not the dissolved ones.

In commercial use throughout the world, the highest volume desalination plants use Reverse Osmosis systems. The advantage to this (as with the energy inefficient high-volume distillation plants) is when removing the aqueous salts; all organics including waterborne disease-carrying organisms are also removed.

Water purification techniques that are adequate for processing lake water into drinking water are not enough to process seawater. And so here lies the main difference between the water desalinization and purification.

Both the systems, water purification and desalinization have some similarities also. A desalinization system which makes the water drinkable by removing the dissolved salts, purify the water by itself. The commercial Reverse Osmosis plants not only desalinize the water but also treat the lake or even sewage water into drinkable form.

Distillation plants are successful in the areas where we have enough sources of energy to run these plants, to turn lake water or any other source of water into usable form. Seawater can not be made drinkable by micro filtration or other fresh water purification plants.

Since, pure water is becoming scarcer and harder to obtain, appliances to desalinize and purify the water are becoming a necessity. Generally, the method to desalinize the salty water is done by two different techniques. First is the thermal desalination technique in which water is made to heat until the boiling point is reached. Once the water reaches that level, it is allowed to condense. On the other hand, other method known as membrane desalinization, pressure and electric current is used.
