Communication – A Crucial Ingredient Of Any Relationship
One of the most important components in a strong relationship is communication. We need it to grow and to better understand each other. Without proper communication we’re not able to understand the needs of our other half and relationship starts to slowly but steadily worsen.
Communication involves talking and listening. Many times when relationships go sour, words are exchanged, but communication is not really established. Arguing is not communication. To communicate you actually have to listen to one another.
So many couples break up simply because they’re unable to communicate properly. Communication skills really are important, but this is always a two-way street. Both sides must work on it. Here are some ideas on how to start.
One of the most basic skills you will need is listening. Many have problems listening without any interruption. They want to be right, they need to comment something or they need an answer right away. This is not effective communication. Learn how to give the speaker your attention and respect. Just listen.
When you’re done listening, it’s your order to talk. Remember that people can’t read your mind, even if they’re in love. Open up, share your thoughts and feelings, talk about what is important to you. Try not to accuse and judge.
Avoid arguments and try not to overreact. Compromise is good, it’s not a sign of weakness. Dropping pride and ego requires strength. Try to step back and see the situation in a new light. Learn to forgive, no one is perfect. If you made a mistake, admit it and apologize.
To have a chance of getting through relationship problems, communication is a must. If you value your relationship, you must be committed to make it work. Being able to effectively communicate is a skill and as with any skill, it requires practice, time and patience to master it.
