Choosing Wedding Centerpieces
March 5, 2010 by Tanya Calajan
Planning the wedding centerpieces can be one of a bride’s most time consuming tasks. Since the reception is the joyous culmination of the big day, the couple may wish to join forces and make decisions about what they want to portray with their reception dcor.
When brainstorming wedding centerpiece ideas, you may want to consider a theme, possibly something that has special meaning to you and your husband to be, such as where or when you met. This is the fun part; you have so many possibilities. Themes can vary, from a tropical luau to autumn leaves to a two-tone color splash, such as pink and black.
Once the theme is set, it is time to think about the table lighting, which provides mood, not only for the centerpiece, but also for the walls and ceiling. Lighting sources can include candles, tiny white electrical bulbs, luminaries, or tea lights. Other tabletop accessories for the wedding reception centerpiece can include waterfalls, vases, and votives.
The centerpiece’s theme will provide ideas for party favors for guests, which can range from inexpensive plastic figurines, homemade crafts, or delicate gourmet cakes. The Internet is flush with instructions how to incorporate favors, such as flowers, candles, fruits, vegetables, miniatures, dolls, and photos into wedding table centerpieces. In addition, YouTube has many systematic videos showing how to make your own creations.
If you decide to make the favors yourself, enlist some friends or relatives to help. This is a great place to save money, but acquire assistance. You do not want to be up by yourself until the middle of the night, putting together table favors.
You could also decide to go with dcor from different cultures. Different traditions call for use of more natural material when decorating centerpieces for weddings. A quick Web search will help you learn more about each and point you to appropriate places to order supplies.
Color seems to play a big part in celebrations in all cultures. Red and yellow clay pots and cacti are popular decorations for Mexican wedding reception centerpieces. Baskets are used frequently in African American centerpieces, filled with calla lilies or irises. In addition, cherry blossoms on branches or floating in bowls of water make simple, yet classic Asian style table centerpieces.
When it is time for the reception, assign a couple of people to hand out, keep track of several disposable cameras, and have guests capture some candid moments, including a few people admiring your wedding centerpiece. Then relax and have fun on your special day.
