Choosing A Device For Treating Drinking Water

by

Safe drinking water has become an issue in recent years due to highly growing water pollution. The drinking water in some areas contains many hazardous substances that are not removed by local water treatment procedures. To eliminate this kind of impurities found in drinking water you need to install some water treatment devices.

Three most common types of water treatment devices available in market are: filters, distillers and softeners. Most common among the three are filters.

Distillation is a process in which water is heated up to boiling point and the steam is collected in a separate container which is later on condensed to get pure water. Water softening is a process of removing hardness causing minerals (calcium and magnesium) from water to make it fit for use.

Carbon filters, sediment filters and reverse osmosis units can be used as filtering device in various filters. Generally, people use carbon filters as reverse osmosis filters are quite expensive.

Carbon filters uses carbon cartridges having porous surface. The cartridge does not allow a large variety of harmful substances to pass through it. There are five types of carbon filters available which include: Faucet mount, Portable (pour through), Specialty (ice makers), Line by-pass (beneath the sink) (entering the house) and Stationary (under sink).

Sediment filters are used to remove solid particles out of water. Two types of sediment filters available are fiber filters and ceramic filters. Fiber filters contain cellulose, rayon etc to form a net having small pores that do not allow dirt to pass through it. The filtered water passes to the opening that leads to the faucet. Ceramic filters work similarly like sediment filters but the difference is that the water passes through a ceramic filtration media.

As discussed above, reverse osmosis filtration system is most expensive but the water that is filtered by it is very pure and free of all the contaminants. A RO system has a semi permeable membrane that eliminates all the soluble and insoluble impurities from water. In some of the RO systems carbon filters are also used along with the semi permeable membrane to enhance the level of purification.

When it comes to choosing one among all these water treatment devices, you should go for a test of water that is supplied into your house. Through these tests, you can know which kind of contaminants are mostly present in your drinking water and can take a filtering device that can completely eliminate if from the water.
