Ceiling Lights Buying Guide

February 8, 2010 by

Ceiling light is an essential part of a house that is used to light up any room. With a good ceiling light you can add extra glow to your room. In market, you will find various styles of lightings having different design and pattern. Choose one that can really add a different and astonishing look to your room.

Chandeliers, pendant light fixtures, island light fixtures, flush mount light fixtures and track lighting are various ceiling lights to choose from. The choice is up to you and also depends on the room where the light is required because different rooms have different requirements.

When you are looking for a ceiling fixture, you want to consider first and foremost the size of the room you are lighting. To do that, measure the room’s width in feet, double it and then convert the feet to inches. Like this you can have an approximate idea of diameter for a chandelier to fit that room.

The place where the light will be installed also affects your decision of choosing a light. Such as if you are taking a light for dinning room then you will choose a light that can light up the center of your dinning table. If you need to choose the light for living room then you will select a light that can light up the main sitting area.

The distance between the floor and ceiling where the light would be installed should be near around 7 feet. In case you fix a light on a table then it should be 30 inches from top of table.

In case the space between floor and ceiling is less than 7 feet then avoid using pendant or chandelier lighting rather use flush mounted fixture. Like this you can save yourself or any other person from hitting the light. On contrary, if the light is installed at a good height then it becomes difficult for you to change it or replace it.

Some light fixtures, especially chandeliers, require non-standard light bulbs. This is something to consider, as you will need to find specialty bulbs to replace the ones that are burn out.

Dimmer switches can also be used along with your ceiling lights. Using these switches you can change the intensity of lights. These switches are perfect in changing the mood and ambience of a room. With these switches, a good amount of electricity could be saved.
