Causes And Cure Of A Frozen Pipe

December 25, 2009 by

In every winter, you come across problems like frozen pipes. The main causes of frozen pipes are turning off of heating valve when you go out for a holiday and still water in pipes. Any of the two problems could lead to frozen pipes. Freezing can occur in any water pipe exposed to temperatures of 32F or below.

Pipes are most susceptible to freezing when they are located at attics, unheated rooms, outside a wall, in an unheated crawlspace and under a sink.

As describes above, turning off heat valve for quite a long time could cause freezing of pipes. It is very difficult and expensive to thaw a frozen pipe. So it’s better that you follow the preventive measures to avoid such situation. Whenever you go out of your home, instead of turning off the heat valve, you can set it to a lower level say 50 degrees. It is a sufficient temperature to prevent water from freezing and would not add much to your utility bills.

Still water is another big cause of frozen pipes. It is quite important to keep a faucet dripping or running because moving water freezes at a lower temperature than still water. If you will keep on moving the water in your pipe, you will be able to prevent it from freezing up to a great extent.

One more effective way is to insulate the water pipes so that they get less affected by the outside temperature. Some pipes that are exposed directly to wind and outer environment are in more need of insulation.

When water gets frozen it will start pushing the walls of pipe as they need more space. In this pushing the pipes may get damaged. Now when the frozen pipes start thawing, the water could expel out of the pipes and could cause a huge damage. The consequences of this situation are very bad so you should try to avoid this situation in every possible manner.

If you were not able to catch the problem in its early stage then you will definitely deal with a lot of things later on. Once your pipes have become frozen and begin to burst, you have no other choice but to bear its adverse affects and call a plumber.

In case the pipe bursts, stay away from that water because that water is very cold and could harm you. Ask all your family members to stay away from that. If something is there in the room that could be damaged with the water then remove it from there after wearing a rain coat and waterproof boots. Call a plumber immediately to handle the situation.
