Build Muscle At An Older Age Via Rowing Machines

August 11, 2009 by

Getting old doesn’t mean sacrificing your strength. While that can happen rather easily, you have the choice even in late age to build your body back up with strength training. Rowing machines have been proven to be an excellent method of doing so, especially for the elderly who are limited in choice.

The key aspect of rowing that makes it perfect for the elderly is that you can move at your own pace. Even if you don’t have any experience in strength training at all, you can get started with rowing for sport and hobby. Those new to the sport will want to start on the rowing machine first, and leave embarking on the waters until the basic motions are down.

We can all say we have had a sore back at some point or another. It’s just a common ailment that the elderly seem to have more often than younger people. The elderly should investigate rowing as a long term solution, since it will align the back with good posture observed. It also strengthens the back- shielding it from harm and pains associated with simple lifting.

The machines can be more than just a workout, they are therapeutic. The gentle motions of a rowboat can be hypnotizing- but in a good way. Alternating between strong and weaker strokes can also put you in a groove, or rhythm if you will. Those who use rowing machines concur that the monotony of a regular workout isn’t present.

Others just use rowing machines to warm up for other activities. They use the fun motions of the row machine to gently stretch and work their upper body muscles before a period of free weight lifting. IT can also help loosen up muscles before one decides to enter a sauna, go to the pool, or take on a massage from a masseuse. In this case, rowing can do a lot more than build muscle- it can be used to prepare for other activities.

Rowing machines are great fun, but also consider going outside to use a real rowboat if you haven’t already. A real rowboat takes a lot of skill to maneuver, so you should practice at least for a few months before even thinking about it. Build up your strength and then look at a few clubs in your area. If you don’t have any, talk to a friend to see if they would be interested in testing the waters with you.

In Conclusion

Rowing can be a fun hobby for all ages- not just the elderly. Some of the most famous heroes in history have all taken up rowing in their teens, and carried their love throughout adulthood. Perhaps at least trying it wouldn’t be such a bad idea!
