Basic Stretches That Help Relieve Back And Neck Pain

March 8, 2010 by

Back and neck pain is a familiar problem for many people nowadays. Our lifestyles sometimes place our bodies into positions that lead to stress and strain on the muscles of these regions. Fortunately, there are quite a few helpful stretching techniques that concentrate on the muscles of the neck and back to help you avoid muscle strain. Here are a handful of uncomplicated stretching exercises that should ease your aching muscles and help prevent additional injury.

Shoulder Roll: This is certainly an easy stretch and perfect for loosening up the shoulders and neck. In either a sitting or standing position, circle your shoulders up, back, down and forward. Start with a slight circular motion, and incrementally enlarge it to a bigger rotation. Perform 10 rotations in the backwards direction, followed by 10 repetitions going frontward.

Basic Back Stretch: This straightforward stretching exercise is terrific for your spine. This is what you do: Standing erect, tighten your abdominals as you lean down at the hips while dropping your hands to the ground. Let your head hang down in a relaxed fashion, and push gently against the ground using your fingertips. You should be aware of the stretch in your back while you do this. Attempt to hold this pose for 30 seconds. If this is too hard for you at first, work up slowly to this length of time.

Wide Back and Shoulder Stretch: This stretching exercise is done directly following the basic back stretch. Keep you hands touching the ground, set your feet wide apart with your arms positioned within your legs. Then lift your hands off the ground, wrap your arms around the back of the calves, and grab your ankles, lightly pulling with your hands. This will loosen up your shoulders and stretch out your upper back. Hold this position for up to 30 seconds.

Stretching exercises are important to keep your muscles supple, however, there are further safeguards you might want to take if you want to prevent back and neck strain. Good posture is essential to keep your spinal column aligned and help to avoid too much stress on the supporting muscles. You also need to ensure you avoid any movements which have the ability to produce trauma. For example, take care when lifting heavy objects. Don’t lean forward at your waist but rather at your legs as you reach down. While you’re lifting, your legs must carry the load, not the back.

Your sleeping habits may also cause tense muscles in the neck and back. It’s important that you get a mattress and pillow that provide excellent support. You must also ensure the temperature in your room is just right so that you don’t toss and turn all night long. Performing a few simple stretches right before you head off to bed will lead to relaxed muscles and a restful sleep.
