Basic Magic Vanish Methods
February 6, 2010 by James Wong
A vanish is one of the most powerful effect a magician can perform. But how could something solid vanish into nothing in front of the eyes of the spectators?
Theoretically, a vanish is the same as a production but in reverse. In vanish effects, magician could perform with an object or a person, same as the case in appearance effects. To vanish an object means to cause something to seemingly exist no more. Usually, the object is vanished not in full view of the spectators, but hidden from views. The moment of vanish is created within the spectators mind rather than visually. Only some rare trick, could the magician produces a visual, gradual vanish of an object, which is remarkable and magical.
Of course, it is impossible to really vanish anything. What the magician actually does is to hide the thing out of view. He could do it at the moment of vanish, by the help of speed. Or he could convince the spectators that the object has vanish but in fact hid it later. The object could be hidden right at the location of vanish or transferred some other places.
Practically all of the methods enumerated under the list of principles for accomplishing appearances, reversed, may be employed for the present effect. You may find some of the principles different at sight but in fact with the same essence.
Not all appearance principles can be easily converted into a vanish effect due to their own natures and conditions. Some can be straightly applied in both kinds of effects, like pulling the object with a thread. One can use this kind of device for both appearance and vanish effects. The only difference is simply the direction where the object is moved to and from. The magician could always modify the details of a trick and method to make it suit his use.
With modern technology in various fields like mechanical engineering, people can achieve very difficult tasks, even miraculous to some. But in the world of magic performance, we almost always find the simpler the method, the more magical the effect. Also, it is so much of an enjoyment to fool a crowd of audience with a simple and direct mean which is kept as a secret.
A perfect example of a good vanish effect is the basic coin vanish. The magician holds a coin in his right hand. He puts it into his left hand. He closes his hand and makes a magical gesture, the coin vanishes. The secret is that he did not really put the coin into the left hand. When everybody else believe so and look at it, he disposed the coin undercover of misdirection.
With the use of what we call a “false transfer”, one can utilize this principle to make small objects vanish. For larger objects, the same principle can be used but some other accessories are needed like a covering cloth.
