Background Checks – What They Consist Of.

by

When you first apply for a job, or find out that anyone is going to do a background check on it, it can be quite intimidating. Background checks always seem so ominous, with not many people actually knowing what a background check consists of. Thoughts of everything you have ever done, spent or bought flood your mind, and of course you wonder what they will find out. So, what does a background check really consist of?

The answer to that depends on what type of job you are applying for. If you are applying for an entry level job or one that has no customer interaction or doesn?t involve any cash or money transfers, then chances are the background check will usually consist of nothing more than employment and reference verification. However, if someone is doing a background check on you to validate who you are as a person, or if you are getting a job that requires you to go into people?s homes, or handle cash then it might be much more detailed.

Typical background checks consist of a criminal record check, employment verification, and education verification. If someone wants more information regarding your life, your background check may consist of a driving verification if you are driving a company vehicle, a sex offender status if you are working with children or even a financial background check if you are dealing with large amounts of money. This may consist of a credit check to see how responsible you are. Each background check is different depending on what it is used for, so it is important to ask the person who wants to give you a background check what they are looking for. In most cases, they will tell you exactly what type of background check is being issued, and will ask for permission to perform one. It is up to you at that point whether you want to continue to have a background check done.

If you are job hunting then you probably know that your potential employer will surely do a background check of yours! It is quite daunting to know that your past will be checked. You don?t know what they will check and they will see? Your entire past life comes back in your mind? You think of everything you did in the past and wonder what and how much your potential employer will find out! So what is exactly a background check and what can an employer find out?

The common details on a background check contain criminal records, education and employment verification. But if the employer wants a more personal and specific check done on you, they will pull up driving records if you are going to drive a company vehicle, check if you have has a sex offender?s record if you are working with children or a financial record if your job profile involves dealing with huge amount of cash. Each employer or company will perform different types of background checks depending on the job you?ve applied for. They can have a credit check only if you give them your permission. You also have the right to ask them what exactly they are looking for. Most companies will tell you what they are going to perform the background check for and ask for a written permission from you to perform them. Here you can either accept or deny a background check.
