How do you choose underlay?

When buying new carpet, there is a good chance you will need undelay. Some carpet does not require it, but the majority of carpets do. Unless you are replacing carpet and there is already underlay underneath. Or perhaps you pulled up the old carpet and someone had foolishly glued the carpet to the underlay causing it to come up with it! Or perhaps the underlay is sodden with an unpleasant smell and needs replacing!
