Back when the first 4-lane highway was being built in Juneau, my friend Crazy Gail was working on the project as a laborer. He was living in his vehicle several miles from the work-site, parking at nights near Fish Creek on North Douglas Island and cooking over a campfire and enjoying the quiet. There were bears you could hear in the distance, in the bushes, eating the fish running up the river.
