Plants For A Rock Garden

Where frost is not severe Portulacaria afra, with reddish stems and small glossy leaves, provides a neat little bush, especially when pruned. Kalanchoes add interesting foliage and flowers and an assortment of mesembryanthemums will give radiance over many months. Greenovia auria’s rosettes, closed during the hottest, driest months, are spread to receive the welcome rain. In early spring come the sprays of flat, circular bloom which remind one of yellow starfish.

Classes Of Hybrid Lilies

One class of easily grown, popular lilies which has been somewhat neglected received the attention of George Slate of Geneva, New York. In addition to writing an excellent book, “Lilies for American Gardens,” years ago Mr. Slate found time to do some first class hybridizing.

Showcasing The Lilac Its Time

Lilacs are hardy plants; with only a little care, they thrive in any garden, providing it is not in a year-round warm climate. This is the time to select lilacs so they will be delivered in time for fall planting.

October Means There Is Still Garden Work To Do

For rich coloring, zestful weather and sheer gloriousness, October stands by itself. Gardenwise it is the time of the harvest, and though final planting and cleaning-up chores dominate the month’s calendar, there is enough time for the leisurely enjoyment of mellow days and the last of the season’s flowers.

Dried Pictures Bring Life

Did you have one of those vacations this year that you would cherish all the more with a picture, using some of the dried materials gathered on such a trip? First, one must choose a suitable frame. A nice size is 12 x 14, although any size to your liking is permissible. If you are not the handy man around the house, have a box made the same size as your frame, using the frame for the cover. The box should be about the size of the glass on your frame and about two inches deep. The first step is to paint the inside of this box a suitable color, usually a sky blue. This background can then be used as the sky or blue water. However, one’s imagination can guide one as to the color. A green is beautiful and cool.

The Gems Of The Garden

The gems of the garden, Primulas are very hardy perennials, even in severe climates they seldom are killed in winter, but grow strong and healthy with deep green foliage, and year after year bloom and bloom with no extra care, fuss or bother.. In early spring they commence to bloom and soon the bed is a blaze of bright pretty color. They are beautiful when massed under shrubs, in the rock garden or by the pool. They always come in for their share of attention. They grow well in a cool semi-shady location well drained with plenty of water during blooming seasons – when planted in a mulchey bed of leaf mold, enriched with barn yard fertilizer, and some raw bone-meal they will be happy and bloom well. They do enjoy a little lime in the soil.

Protecting Chrysanthemums During Winter

Eventually we may have many varieties of garden, often called hardy, chrysanthemums which are reliably hardy everywhere. At present, I know of no cut-flower variety, such as Lavender Lady, Red Riding Hood, Allegro and the various spoons, that can be depended upon to survive our Winters without protection. Three varieties which have lived through several years without Winter-protection are Chestnut Burr, Cocheco and Ember. The first two are rather dwarf, and the latter is too late blooming to be of much value.

Our Picture Garden – Landscape Rocks, Flowers And Trees

I stood beside an artist and watched as he, with swift strokes of his brush, brought the colorful landscape to his canvas. With the distant hills for background, this sloping bit of landscape was enclosed by trees overshadowing a small blue pool which was surrounded by wild flowers of many hues and cool lacy fern. A few moss covered stones which seemed to grow from the earth, completed this lovely scene.
