Attaching A PVC Pipe To A Copper Pipe
The modifications in the plumbing systems are unforeseen. A particular plumbing requirement could force the homeowner to modify its plumbing setup. Similarly, some homeowners wish to install additional systems such as sprinkler system or irrigation system on their existing plumbing framework. Such a scenario requires you to make connections between the PVC pipes and the copper pipes. Some modifications would save you from the unwanted purchases of new pipes.
The male threads of the copper pipe connect with the female threads of the PVC pipe. In simple words, you would require a copper male adapter and a PVC female adapter.
Though the task appears simple but it may turn daunting once it initializes. It is very important to keep the guidance of an expert at your disposal. The plumber would be able to correct you on the errors.
Decide the juncture where the two pipes are required to meet. Take a hacksaw and cut the copper pipe from the intended point. Allow the standing water to drain out. Render a water-free and clean surface to the connecting end of the pipe with the help of rag and sand. The concerned portion of the pipe must look shinier than the rest of the pipe surface. Clean the slip end of the new male adapter using the same procedure.
Coat the inside of the pipe and the adapter with soldering flux. Join the adapter to the copper pipe by pushing it over the face of the pipe. A twirl sound would approve the successful installation of the adapter. Now, take a propane torch and blow it on the joint. Allow the fixture to heat up. On account of heating, the flux would melt out of the setting and spread over the joint. Let the flux dry for about 20-30 minutes.
Follow it up by wrapping Teflon tape around the juncture. Do not overdo the wrapping and keep the number of wraps to 1 or 2.
Now, initiate the actual task. Take a PVC adapter unit (female) in your hand and screw it to the copper male threaded adapter. Use your hands to tighten the fixture at first. If the screw doesn’t turn further then use a pipe wrench.
Use PVC cement to prepare the other side of the pipe for connection.
