Are You Looking To Bring a Canine Friend into Your Home? Visit a Shelter to Adopt a Puppy

May 23, 2009 by

Every home needs a dog as most probably they are the most adorable and enjoyable companions one could hope for. Though all dogs are loyal and lovable, some people come to a conclusion that only a thoroughbred, complete with papers would do for them and go through classified and pet shops to find a picture perfect dog.

While I do like thoroughbreds (who wouldnt?), a visit to a dog shelter never ceases to pull my heartstrings. Most dogs found in a shelter are not thoroughbreds, but they are of the mixed breed, usually called as mutts and in my opinion, these cute dogs are the best.

Thoroughbred dogs can be high strung and neurotic, albeit a perfect show pet. This can be a concern if you’re looking for a family pet that’s good with kids and isn’t overly aggressive. On the other hand, when you adopt a puppy from the animal shelter, you’ve got dozens of absolutely unique and adorable personalities to choose from.

Another factor to consider is that, while the ‘fancy’ puppies in the pet shops and from dog breeders advertising in the classifieds will always find a buyer and will never end up in a shelter, shelter puppies are in danger of being put down if they don’t find a home. Of course, the shelter dog is not aware of his or her impending doom, but you are! When you adopt a puppy, you’re literally saving his life!

This makes me remember the Disney fairy tale, Lady and the Tramp. Tramp was the outcast who was absolutely adorable with his fun filled, daring and adventurous personality. Though he was sent to the pound for stealing some sausages with his friends, he escaped from his dire fate and was finally adopted by the family of Lady who was a thoroughbred, to lead a happy life ever after. Though we had only a glimpse of their puppies, they were the cutest litter of puppies you would have ever seen. You will be giving a huge thumps-up to them when you decide to adopt a shelter puppy.

Mixed breed puppies are typically more stable in temperament, easier to train and housebreak and are as loyal and loving as a dog can be. Like Tramp, they’re not encumbered with genetic flaws that might make them a less than perfect pet.

If you are still in dilemma about adopting a shelter puppy, here are some more fact to tilt your scale in favor of a mutt: that picture perfect thoroughbred is definitely going to cost you a fortune. A shelter puppy on the other hand, is going to become the most loved member of you family for a song.

Moreover, he is so irresistible, enticing and absolutely cute. If you are looking for a family pet then make a visit to a shelter first. I am certain that you will definitely adopt one before leaving the shelter.
