Is The Safety Of E-Cigarettes A Valid Concern Or A Political Agenda?
Debate about the safety of electronic cigarettes has continued since the product was first sold. Much of the information tossed about is factually incorrect but that hasn’t stopped big tobacco and big pharma from spreading the rumors.
A trade association formed last year will represent e-cigarette provides and offer a collective voice that will focus on providing truthful information to the buying public about the safety factor of e-cigarettes. The FDA has given in to powerful tobacco lobbies and issued statements warning of the potential hazards posed by e-cigs. The FDA bases its theories on a non-scientific study of a limited number of e-cigarettes that indicated some of the products contained trace amounts of a dangerous chemical.
No tests were conducted on tobacco to determine whether the same substance occurred in standard cigarettes nor was any followup testing done of a larger sample of electronic products to replicate the original results.
Consumers who ask “are electronic cigarettes safe” will find e-cigarettes contain only 20 ingredients compared to 599 ingredients in tobacco cigarettes. Tobacco smokers inhale over 4000 different chemical compounds and additives. Although tobacco companies state additives used were judged safe by the FDA that is not quite the full truth. Many additives in cigarettes were not tested for compounds released when the additive is burned. Chemical elements can change when exposed to high levels of heat.
Association with smoking tobacco lays a mantle of guilt by association on nicotine. Studies over the years clearly show smoking tobacco can cause various types of cancer and increase the risk of heart disease. Tobacco smoke is also believed to decrease natural immunity in some users leaving them vulnerable to colds, bronchitis and pneumonia.
The properties of nicotine itself to not promote cancer in healthy tissue and nicotine has no mutagenic properties when separated from tobacco. There is no evidence that long term use of nicotine is detrimental to health. Nicotine is the reason we become addicted to tobacco. It is the fix we want when we light a cigarette yet it is not nicotine that damages our health.
Gums, patches and lozenges designated as nicotine replacement products have been freely available in stores for years. Originally, the nicotine patch was only available by prescription but was later approved as an over the counter product. The stop smoking products have not revealed any significant health risks in the years since they were first released.
The best e-cigs deliver a measured dose of nicotine to the e-smoker. Nicotine is provided in a safe form that soothes the smoker’s craving without the risks of smoking tobacco. The Royal College of Physicians stated they do not suspect adverse health effects will result from the long term use of nicotine.
Mary Kay Rivers has become an expert on all aspects of electronic cigarettes. Her publications about how electronic cigarettes function or about the best electronic cigarette have become well-known.
