All About The History Of Lego Trains For Hobbyists From The Brick Train Shop

June 28, 2010 by

The history of Lego Trains is long and there are many kids and adults that still enjoy them today. Over the course of the life of the toy, they have had several forms and each series finds a new fan.

They came about in 1966 and had blue rails. This first train did not have any way to power it, instead it was pushed along the track. Later that year, they added a 4.5 volt battery to give it some propulsion. In 1969, they electrified the rails with a 12 volt transformer, and for a long time all three types were available to buy at the same time.

A new design came in 1980 with gray rails. Even the transformer upgraded to being able to power more then just the train, and several sets included lights. During this time, the trains were made to resemble real ones and they made them longer.

A decade later, they introduced the 9 volt system with the tracks having metal strips to make the train move. Earlier versions were unable to use this track, and the newer trains were simplified. In 2006 the train got another face lift, with the metal strip being removed from the track to cut cost and became entirely manufactured from plastic. Even the propulsion system got an upgrade, and they were remote controlled instead of relying on a motor or transformer.

The newest train in the line is the Power Function, and they were introduced in 2009. They use the same track as the RC models with the addition of flexibility to them. In order for these newer trains to work, the motor is sold separately.

The history of Lego Trains is interesting and Brick Train Stop can help you find the train from your youth or help you find the perfect one for you today. They are the experts in the toy, and can create or complete any set you want to have.
