About Neurogenic Stuttering

by

A possible cause of stuttering currently under investigation is neurogenic stuttering. With stuttering of this type, it is thought that the nerves associated with speech are not properly reacting to messages from the brain.

Stuttering is seen as a disorder of speech development. This can occur in either children or adults. The natural flow of speech is disrupted when a person stutters. This results in words, phrases, or parts of words being repeated. Sometimes, certain parts of words are dragged out as the stutterer tries to get the word out. In both instances, the end result is stuttering.

Often neurogenic stuttering is accompanied by rapid eye blinking. The jaw and lips seem tight. The stutterer may even appear to have upper body tremors brought on by the difficulty they experience in getting their words out.

Studies conducted have attempted to determine both a cause and a treatment for this disorder. Unfortunately there have been no definitive results of this research, but it does continue. The latest research examines potential new medications and treatment options for neurogenic stuttering.

There seems to be a mystery surrounding stammering or stuttering. It occurs when the person is singing, reading something aloud, or talking to themselves. On these occasions, the stuttering seems to disappear.

The reason is not clear. But one idea is that the areas in the brain that are responsible for the development of speech are different in stuttering people than in people who have normal language development.

Close to three million people have this disorder in the United States. You may first notice something at ages two through to age six. Take action as soon as it’s clear that the child is not outgrowing the stuttering problem.

A stuttering child is as intelligent as any other child. To reach his or her potential, be sure the child gets help from a speech therapist right away, as well as providing encouragement and your full support. By doing this you can ensure that the stuttering problem does not get worse as they get older.

Try not to let yourself get too worried if a member of your family or maybe even yourself stutters. There are some very famous people who were stutterers as children. They overcame the problem and have gone on to become very successful. For instance, did you know that singer Carly Simon and actors James Earl Jones or Bruce Willis stuttered as kids?

The best scenario for a person who stutters is to be in a supportive atmosphere with understanding friends and family around him or her. Accepting the person for who they are is important, stuttering or not.

If you suffer from neurogenic stuttering, there is hope that researchers will discover better treatment options in the near future.
